Antibiotic Stewardship

Since their discovery, antibiotics have proven to be revolutionary in the practice of medicine allowing treatment of infections which were once considered untreatable and lethal.  However,  misuse of these miraculous drugs have led to significant consequences including individual patient harm resulting from antibiotic related side effects and societal harm due to the spread of antibiotic resistance. 

Antibiotic stewardship is the practice of ensuring appropriate and judicious use of antibiotics to improve treatment of infectious disease while reducing the potential harms from misuse and overuse.

►Georgia Honor Roll for Antibiotic Stewardship

The Georgia Honor Roll for Antibiotic Stewardship was established in 2014 by the Georgia Healthcare-Associated Infections Advisory Committee (GHAIAC).  The goal of the program was to provide an incentive for acute care facilities and critical access hospitals to engage in antimicrobial stewardship.

Since the release of the original Honor Roll, several initiatives led by federal agencies have been introduced to further enhance antimicrobial stewardship in the inpatient setting.  In light of these initiatives, the Georgia Honor Roll for Antibiotic Stewardship was revised to encourage facilities to build sustainable programs or enhance their existing programs with evidence-based practices.  Please click here.
