  • Biology of Language Study External Web Site Policy
Approximately 5 out of 100 children entering kindergarten will have delayed language development and meet the criteria for Specific Language Impairment (SLI), making SLI more common than autism, childhood cancer, and Down syndrome. This study examines language and reading problems in children and seeks to explore how genes may play a role in a child’s difficulties acquiring and understanding language.
  • Biomarkers of Developmental Trajectories and Treatment in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
The study will evaluate the efficacy of a novel intervention implemented in a classroom setting aimed at improving joint attention and joint engagement skills with infants who are at risk of developing an ASD.
  • Promoting Optimal Parenting (Bright Start)
The purpose of this study is to determine if delivering parenting education materials in different ways during the first 30 months of a child’s life will increase child-parent attachment and promote mother-child interaction; if certain types of strategies improve cognitive, language, and emotional development in infants and toddlers; and how cost-effective the delivery methods are.
  • Adaptive Interventions for Minimally Verbal Children with ASD in the Community
This study will construct an adaptive intervention that uses two interventions that have shown promise for optimizing the number of unique socially communicative and spontaneously spoken words in minimally verbal children with ASD.
  • Enhancing Children’s Cognitive and Brain Health Through Physical Activity Training
Using a randomized controlled design, this study aims to determine whether cardiorespiratory fitness training in preadolescence improves neurocognitive function and academic performance.
  • Addressing Health Literacy and Numeracy to Prevent Childhood Obesity
The aim of the study is to assess the efficacy of a low-literacy/numeracy-oriented intervention aimed at teaching pediatric resident physicians to promote healthy family lifestyles and prevent overweight among young children (age 0 to 2) and their families in under-resourced communities.
