100 Years of Current Employment Statistics Symposium
To mark the 100th anniversary of the Current Employment Statistics (CES) survey, the Bureau of Labor Statistics held a symposium on October 19th, 2015, at its headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Employment estimates from the CES survey are one of the first Principal Federal Economic Indicators released each month, and are among
the world’s most-watched economic data. CES data are used by federal government policy-makers, central bankers, industry analysts, and trade unions. The survey originated 100 years ago with the publication of national-level employment and payroll data for just 4 manufacturing industries—boots and shoes, cotton goods, cotton finishing, and hosiery and underwear.
Speakers at the event included:
Erica L. Groshen, Commissioner, Bureau of Labor Statistics
Thomas E. Perez, U.S. Secretary of Labor
Alan Greenspan, former Federal Reserve Chair
Jared Bernstein, former Chief Economist and Economic Advisor to Vice President Joe Biden, current Senior Fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities
Kevin Hassett, Director of Economic Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute
