Document Destruction for Sensitive and/or Confidential Records

RESIDENTS

Shredded paper (no confetti, no micro shred) is recyclable through the Kauaʻi Recycles program. Shredded paper must be bagged, and placed in the Newspaper section of the Kauai Recycles bins. The County cannot assure the confidentiality of sensitive documents that are shredded and deposited in County programs.

The most secure option for recycling sensitive or confidential documents is to hire a document destruction company that is certified, insured, and bonded to accept sensitive documents. They charge a premium price for service due to the necessary insurance and security required to assure that the records are properly shredded and recycled. Please contact these businesses for pricing and further information: Shred-It: (808) 841-8833 & Access Information: (808) 848-7776.

Backyard composting is also a great way to “recycle” shredded paper, especially paper that has a very small shred width. Shredded paper is a good source of carbon, which is the main ingredient to a compost pile. Residents are eligible to receive a free Earth Machine Composting Bin through the Kauaʻi Resource Center after viewing a brief training video. Call 241-4841 for more information.

If the price of certified, insured, and bonded shredding services is prohibitive, we suggest that businesses sort high security documents and perform internal shredding. Paper with shred width of 1/4" or larger are accepted for recycling free of charge at
