Fast Forward to Spring at the U.S. Botanic Garden

As I entered the Garden Court in the U.S. Botanic Garden (USBG) Conservatory my senses came alive from the aroma of hundreds of orchids, the sight of colorful blooms — from deep orange to vibrant purple and the sounds of a symphony playing and fountains splashing.

The warmth of the garden was a welcome escape from this year's unrelenting cold, and from this particularly snowy day. I’m always excited for this biennial exhibit at the USBG, and this year's display lived up to my expectations.

The large topiaries in the shape of musical instruments add whimsy to the Garden Court and the fountains, timed to the music filling the room provide a peaceful atmosphere.

Beyond the Garden Court, the display of orchids extends throughout the Conservatory, weaved throughout the USBG's permanent, living collections, such as in the large Jungle room. There are thousands of members of the orchid family, and a wide range is on display in this exhibit.

Oncidium Finial Fire 'Crown' and Aliceara Mathias 'Glamour'

My favorite discoveries had to be the small Oncidium Finial Fire 'Crown,' which reflect the colors of my alma mater (Virginia Tech – Go Hokies!); the Psychopsis Mariposa, with its unique, spidery shape; and the rich color of the Aliceara Mathias 'Glamour.'
