Chiropractic Care Residency Training
The focus of this program is Integrated Clinical Practice, with training emphasizing the provision of chiropractic care in an integrated healthcare system. The residencies provide advanced clinical training in complex case management, allowing recent graduates to increase their scope and depth of clinical knowledge, experience and acumen. Residents are mentored by senior VA chiropractors who are national leaders in integrated chiropractic practice. These clinicians share their expertise in patient care, academics and research to provide a robust educational experience.

In 1963, the PGY2 Pharmacy Residency at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) was one of the first pharmacy residency programs to be accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). This twelve-month long program offers a diverse experience in clinical pharmacy activities. Residents may elect an area of focus in acute care, ambulatory care, geriatrics, or neurology. A teaching certificate program and appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Pharmacy is offered to residents.
PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Neurology
This program is currently in candidate status with ASHP and is expected to be the first ASHP accredited neurology residency program in the nation. This specialty residency provides a comprehensive experience in contemporary neurology pharmacy practice. The residency will practice clinical pharmacy in neurology and neurosurgical patients in an acute setting and in the ambulatory neurology clinics. Experiences in epilepsy, stroke, movement disorders, headache, general neurology, and neurobehavior disorders are included.
PGY2 Pharmacy Residency in Ambulatory Care
This program is currently in pre-candidate status with ASHP. Primarily established in VAGLAHS’s Homeless PACT (Patient Aligned Care Team), this specialty residency will focus on providing care to the underserved. As one of seven VA facilities designated as a Center of Excellence in Primary Care Education, the pharmacy resident will participate in providing care through the iA-HPACT team (Interprofessional Academic-HPACT). iAHPACT was created as a learning lab to promote the transformation of VA into interprofessional learning experiences to prepare trainees to practive, lead, and thrive in team-based health-systems. Additional experiences in select subspecialty clinics will be integrated to ensure a well-rounded experience.

This program is supported by Western University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy with a clinical practice established at VAGLAHS. It is a two year fellowship in cardiovascular pharmacy with a primary focus in cardiovascular outcomes research in a variety of settings. Other activities include didactic and experiential teaching, other presentation and publication opportunities, and providing pharmaceutical care to cardiology patients. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency
Since 1955, our program has trained more than 250 physiatrists and has been dedicated to providing quality patient care. We are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and offer outstanding clinical experiences in all aspects of clinical neurorehabilitation and musculoskeletal medicine including interventional physiatry, electrodiagnostic medicine, amputee care, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, and other subspecialty areas.

Residency Program Mission Statement
To provide high-quality training to entry-level Physical Therapists, using evidence-based, experiential and didactic learning, to train masterful clinicians who possess strong problem-solving abilities, and the desire for self-reflective, life-long learning.
Purpose and Philosophy
The bridge between theory and practice in a novice Physical Therapist in the initial years after formal education is often unclear and met with ambiguous thought processes through trial and error. Without continued mentorship and formal guidance, there grows a blind allegiance to the formative years of learning. One’s pitfalls as a student perpetuate years after graduation. In the case of orthopaedics, some of these pitfalls stem from limited training in kinesiology and how pathologic movement is a basis for neuromusculoskeletal disease. The program aims to provide the Resident with a deeper understanding of the basic science of human anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology, and to be able to extrapolate the breadth and depth of knowledge into the whole patient from the cellular level, to the physical, and biopsychosocial domains. The strong foundation in movement science will improve the analytical and diagnostic ability, such that the Resident will be able to apply highly-effective manual therapy interventions. These include manipulations, as well as tailored therapeutic exercise interventions as suggested by Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs). To achieve this goal, it is imperative that the program emphasizes the importance of skills required for successful implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP), including assessing the patient’s condition, asking important clinical questions specific to patients, acquiring evidence, critical appraisal of evidence, and applying the results to the patients. In addition to the clinical implementation, the results of the critical review of current literature will then serve as a means to identify the knowledge gaps and potential areas of future research. The Resident will also have an opportunity to participate in research projects as part of this Residency Program. The practice of transferring words and ideas to intervention, and contributing to pauses in the evidence, are the very basic tenets of this program.

Psychiatry Residency Training Program
Our program utilizes various measures to gauge the progress of residents and the training experience. Direct observation of work with patients and performance in the didactic curriculum is combined with a review of the written clinical record. Written and verbal feedback from supervisors is standard. All residents take the Psychiatric Resident-In-Training Examination (PRITE) yearly as a measure of their cognitive knowledge based on national norms. Residents take oral examinations yearly to assess competence in clinical assessment, differential diagnosis, case formulation, and treatment plan. A log of psychotherapy cases is maintained to ensure a balanced mix of clinical experience across diagnostic categories, and utilization of the widest possible variety of interventions.
Clinic Directory for Psychiatry Training
The General Outpatient Mental Health Clinic is for Veterans who present with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses and whose needs would not be better served by one of the specialty outpatient mental health programs. Common disorders that are treated in our clinic include: depression, anxiety, non-combat PTSD, psychotic, Bipolar Disorder and substance use. Individual, couples/family and group therapies are made available to our patients, in addition to psychological testing and vocational rehabilitation.

- Diagnosing and treating all psychiatric disorders for patients in a Veteran population.
- Collaborating effectively with clinicians within an interdisciplinary team which includes therapists and case managers.
- Maximizing the psychiatric and overall care of outpatients by navigating and optimizing the use of a complex healthcare system.

Internship Program
The doctoral internship at the West Los Angeles VA Healthcare Center is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. Our next site visit will be during the academic year 2027. Applications for full-time internship positions in psychology will be accepted from students who are enrolled in doctoral programs in clinical or counseling psychology that are accredited by the American Psychological Association or the Canadian Psychological Association. The training program is funded to support eight full-time internship positions, three of which are designated for trainees who will spend six months on rotations in Geropsychology.

For the 2019-2020 training year, the West Los Angeles VA Healthcare Center will be recruiting for six (6) one-year postdoctoral fellowship positions in Clinical Psychology with specific emphasis/focus area training as described below. Our Clinical Neuropsychology Residency is not accepting applications this year. Applicants are required to have completed their doctoral degree and internship in programs accredited by the American Psychological Association or the Canadian Psychological Association. These full-time positions offer emphasis area training in: Health Psychology, Trauma Psychology, Interprofessional Integrative Health (two positions) and Homeless Mental Health (two positions). Our postdoctoral program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) – membership current through 2019 – and is currently in process of seeking accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association for our Clinical Psychology positions as well as specialty accreditation for our Clinical Neuropsychology positions. An APA site visit is scheduled for October of 2018. We seek applicants with strong skills in intervention, assessment, and consultation and our selection criteria focus on prior training/clinical experience and the perceived fit between applicant’s goals and training program objectives.

Internship Program
The doctoral internship at the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) of the American Psychological Association (APA). The next site visit will be during the academic year 2023. We currently offer six fully-funded internship positions. According to VA policy, internship funding can be provided only to students who are U.S. citizens and are in good standing at an American Psychological Association (APA) or Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) accredited graduate program in Clinical, Counseling, or Combined psychology or at a Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) accredited program in Clinical Science. Applicants with a doctorate in another area of psychology who meet the APA or CPA criteria for re-specialization training in Clinical, Counseling, or Combined Psychology are also eligible. In addition, we require that a prospective intern's university advisor or director of training verify that he or she approves and recommends that the student receive an internship at this facility as specified on the APPIC "Academic Program's Verification of Internship Eligibility and Readiness" form. To be considered, internship applicants must demonstrate completion of at least three years of graduate course work and a minimum of 400 direct contact hours in intervention and 80 hours in assessment by the application date.

The postdoctoral residency program at the VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center is currently in the process of obtaining initial APA Accreditation. A self study was submitted, and a site visit has been approved for July 31 and August 1, 2018. The postdoctoral residency program has been an APPIC member since January, 2015. Prior to the start of residency, a candidate must have obtained a doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from a graduate program approved by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed. The applicant may have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and have successfully completed a re-specialization program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology that is APA or CPA accredited. The applicant is expected to have completed an internship program accredited by APA or CPA or have completed a VA-sponsored internship. Our Psychology Residency Program will offer training in two emphasis areas for the 2019-2020 year: one in Substance Use Disorders/Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (SUD/PTSD) and one in Primary Care Mental Health Integration/Behavioral Medicine (PCMHI/B-Med). In 2018, we were awarded a second, one-year, full-time postdoctoral residency position in SUD/PTSD, but it is not clear at this time if we will be granted the funding for this second position for the 2019-2020 training year. We will announce any additional positions in this emphasis area and list all available positions in the Universal Psychology Postdoctoral Directory (UPPD). We also welcome any interested applicants to contact the training director to inquire about availability. We are seeking residency applicants with strong skills in intervention, assessment, consultation, program development, and program evaluation activities. Our selection criteria focus on background training, clinical experience, and the perceived fit between the applicant’s goals and the objectives of the training programs.

Internship Program
The psychology doctoral internship program at VA Los Angeles Ambulatory Care Center (LAACC) is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation (CoA) of the American Psychological Association (APA). We have been continually reaccredited since 1977 and our most recent reaccreditation granted us 7 years, to be reviewed again in 2018. Our self-study was completed and an APA site visit is scheduled for October 2018.
VA LAACC is part of the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS), along with VA West Los Angeles Healthcare Center and VA Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center. VAGLAHS is the largest healthcare system within the VA. Our clinic is an ambulatory care facility located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles that provides comprehensive medical and mental health services to its diverse veteran population. We offer generalist training in a variety of different clinics as outlined in our program brochure. The VA LAACC training program is funded to support 4 full-time internship positions for the 2019-2020 training year. We accept applications from qualified students who meet VA eligibility requirements (see www.psychologytraining.va.gov/eligibility.asp), have completed their dissertation proposal, and have obtained our minimum intervention and assessment hours. The postdoctoral residency program at VA Los Angeles Ambulatory Care Center (LAACC) is currently in the process of applying for initial APA accreditation. We have permanent funding for one full-time, year-long postdoctoral position specializing in Primary Care-Mental Health Integration and Substance Use Disorders (PCMHI/SUD). The selected resident in this position will receive year-long advanced training in psychology with emphasis areas in both PC-MHI and SUDs, with additional elective training opportunities. Supervision for the postdoctoral resident will be provided through the three PC-MHI psychologists on staff and the psychologist who directs the Addictive Behaviors Clinic, with possible supplemental supervision by other members of our psychology training staff.
We accept applications from qualified candidates who meet VA eligibility requirements (see www.psychologytraining.va.gov/eligibility.asp) and have interest and experience in Primary Care Mental Health and working with Substance Use Disorders.
