Aliso Canyon Well Failure

On Octobe​r 23, 2015, a leak at a Southern California Gas Company natural gas storage well was discovered by crews at the Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility.

State agencies are working with SoCalGas and local agencies to monitor the situation and ensure public safety.

On this page you will find information about the CPUC’s actions, and links to information that is available on other state agency websites, such as the Department of Conservation’s Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources, which has primary  jurisdiction over the Aliso Canyon wells.

  • This Winter Withdrawal Protocol describes the process to be followed before making a withdrawal from the Aliso Canyon storage facility. The protocol was developed by the CPUC, the California Independent system Operator, and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, with input from the California Energy Commission. The protocol revised the summer protocol, in recognition of the differences in the conditions that make up winter demand versus summer demand.
