The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of households conducted by the Bureau of Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It provides a comprehensive body of data on the labor force, employment, unemployment, persons not in the labor force, hours of work, earnings, and other demographic and labor force characteristics.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 312,000 in December,
and the unemployment rate rose to 3.9 percent. Job gains occurred
in health care, food services and drinking places, construction,
manufacturing, and retail trade.

In May 2017, 3.8 percent of workers held contingent jobs. The survey also identified
alternative employment arrangements: independent contractors (6.9 percent), on-call
workers (1.7 percent), temporary help agency workers (0.9 percent), and workers
provided by contract firms (0.6 percent).

The unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the
U.S. Armed Forces at any time since September 2001--a group referred
to as Gulf War-era II veterans--edged down to 4.5 percent in 2017.
