Please note: You must contact your local law enforcement agency or district attorney to request an investigation. Under Georgia law, the GBI, as an assisting agency, can ONLY respond to requests for investigations from:

  • Governing officials of a municipality
  • District Attorneys
  • Sheriffs
  • Superior Court Judges
  • Chief law enforcement officers of any municipality
  • Chiefs of county police departments (in counties with population in excess of 100,000)
  • Chiefs of regular or volunteer fire departments (in suspected arson cases)
  • Governor of Georgia (by directive)

Also, we cannot respond to requests for GBI patches due to security concerns.

We must stress that the GBI is not a first responder organization and by statute must be requested by a criminal justice agency before it can open a criminal investigation. Please contact your local law enforcement agency to report criminal activity. They will in turn request assistance from the GBI where it is appropriate.

All records requests are subject to the Georgia Open Records Act and may result in the requestor being billed for the requested information before the records are released. If you have questions, contact the GBI Open Records Unit at 404-270-8527.
