Background on Open Data

Open data refers to publicly available data structured in a way that enables the data to be fully discoverable and usable by end users. The Administration has taken steps to make government-held data more accessible to the public and to entrepreneurs and others as fuel for innovation and economic growth. On May 9, the President signed an Executive Order declaring that information is a valuable resource and strategic asset for the Nation, and directing key actions by federal agencies to advance open data at the federal level.

More background on the Administration’s steps to promote open data is available at Project Open Data, a collaborative site to help agencies adopt the Open Data Policy and unlock the potential of government data.
