June 29, 2011 - ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Family and Child Services (DFCS) will hold a public hearing Thursday, July 14, 2011 to receive comments and feedback on the FY 2012 State Plan for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program Block Grant (LIHEAP). The LIHEAP block grant provides assistance with home heating costs, weatherization and other home energy needs for eligible elderly, homebound, and other low-income Georgians.

June 13, 2011 - ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) is supporting the fight against elder abuse by encouraging Georgians to wear purple on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. A proclamation marking June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Georgia was recently signed by Governor Nathan Deal to educate and raise awareness of the warning signs associated with elder abuse.
June 6, 2011 - ATLANTA – More than 260 foster care youth will be honored and recognized for their educational achievements at the19th Annual Celebration of Excellence. The Celebration of Excellence is a statewide graduation event and scholarship program for youth in Georgia’s foster care system who are graduating from high school, GED programs, vocational school or college. The event will be held on Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at 6 p.m. at Georgia State University’s Rialto Center for the Arts.

Registration for the D-SNAP program will be available in these counties until Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m.

May 10, 2011 - ATLANTA– The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) has received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) to operate a Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). This program is designed to provide food stamp benefits to people who might not ordinarily qualify for the food stamp program.

April 6, 2011 - ATLANTA (GA) – Crimes against older adults and people with disabilities frequently go unrecognized, unreported and unprosecuted, but a new group of statewide agencies aims to change that. The Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of Aging Services has joined with eight organizations to create the At-Risk Adult Crime Tactics (ACT) Specialist Certification – a credential for professionals who are mandated by state law to report suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation. The first certification courses will be available statewide in early 2011.

January 2011 - ATLANTA (GA) — Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS)—a Top 10 private cancer practice in the U.S.—collected 3,530 new and nearly bags during the ninth annual Totes 2 Tots suitcase drive for foster children. The event was held Friday, January 21, at 22 GCS offices across the state.
January 2011 - ATLANTA (GA) – The Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) and the Fatherhood Program are collecting teddy bears and other stuffed animals for children as part of their “Bearable Hugs for Georgia’s Children” campaign. The toys will be given to children receiving care at pediatric facilities throughout Georgia, women’s shelters, law enforcement agencies and other children’s organizations.
