• Electric and Natural Gas

  • The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) regulates investor-owned electric and natural gas utilities operating in California.  Through its oversight over utilities, the CPUC has played a key role in making California a national and international leader on a number of energy-related initiatives designed to benefit consumers, the environment, and the economy.
  • Energy Programs

The energy work responsibilities of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) are derived from the California State Constitution, specifically Article XII, Section 3 and other sections more generally, numerous state legislative enactments and various federal statutory and administrative requirements which the Staff on behalf of the CPUC either carries out as an adjunct to federal authority or represents the Commission and the people of the State of California in federal legislative, regulatory or judicial matters.

The various mandates are represented among the following program areas:

  • Natural Gas

The CPUC regulates natural gas utility service for approximately 10.8 million customers that receive natural gas from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), Southern California Gas (SoCalGas), San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), Southwest Gas, and several smaller investor-owned natural gas utilities.  The CPUC also regulates independent storage operators Lodi Gas Storage, Wild Goose Storage, Central Valley Storage and Gill Ranch Storage.
