2014 NEA Jazz Masters Awards Ceremony & Concert Webcast Archive

2014 NEA Jazz Masters Jamey Aebersold, Anthony Braxton, Richard Davis, and Keith Jarrett were honored at the NEA Jazz Masters Awards Ceremony & Concert at Lincoln Center on January 13, 2014. Hosted by Wynton Marsalis and Soledad O'Brien, the event included brief tribute videos, remarks by the awardees about their careers and influences, and performances by current and previously named NEA Jazz Masters along with guest musicians. This segment's speakers included: hosts Wynton Marsalis and Soledad O'Brien welcoming the live and webcast audiences, NEA Senior Deputy Joan Shigekawa on the new class of NEA Jazz Masters, NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman on 2014 honoree Jamie Aebersold, and Aebersold on his career in music education. Performances included renditions of Cedar Walton's "Bolivia," Charlie Parker's “Ornithology,” and Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave." 

This segment's speakers included: NEA Jazz Master Muhal Richard Abrams on 2014 honoree Anthony Braxton and Braxton on his career and creative philosophy. Poet and former NEA deputy A.B. Spellman introduced the tribute to the seven NEA Jazz Masters who died this past year. Performances included renditions of Anthony Braxton's “Trillium J”  and NEA Jazz Master Frank Wess's “Placitude.” 

This segment's speakers included NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Owens on 2014 honoree Richard Davis, Richard Davis on his career and major influences, Kenny Barron reading letter from NEA Jazz Master George Wein on 2014 honoree Keith Jarrett, and Jarrett on improvisation. Performances included a Richard Davis improvised solo, and renditions of Kenny Dorham's “Blue Bossa,” Jarrett's “Memories of Tomorrow," and Jimmy Heath's “New Picture.”
