Birth Defects Registry

Program Description The Birth Defects Registry is a population-based registry of children with specific birth defects. It serves as the primary entry point into the local, community-based case management system of the Special Child Health and Early Intervention Services Program.

History and Purpose

The NJ Birth Defects Registry was established in 1928 as the “Crippled Children’s Commission” and is the nation’s first birth defects registry. Since 1985, New Jersey has maintained a population-based registry of children with specific birth defects, including metabolic, genetic, and hearing disorders excluded by most other state registries.
