On Friday, September 7, 2018, the Social Security Advisory Board will host a day-long forum on the Social Security Administration’s representative payee program. This forum continues SSAB’s longstanding effort to support and improve a vital government program serving more than 8 million people who need assistance in managing benefits provided by the Social Security Administration. This forum brings policymakers, practitioners and researchers together to explore how SSA can study and improve the representative payee selection process with an evidence-based approach.  Recent legislation, “The Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act of 2018” (H.R. 4547) makes this event especially timely. Please see our forum webpage for more information.

The Social Security Advisory Board applauds new law to strengthen Social Security’s representative payee program

On April 13, 2018 the president signed H.R. 4547, the Strengthening Protections for Social Security Beneficiaries Act of 2018. This bipartisan legislation provides needed improvements to the representative payee program to better protect those who are unable to manage their Social Security benefits on their own.

Board recommends improvements to rep payee programs at SSA and across government

Today, the Social Security Advisory Board (board) is releasing the culmination of two years’ work pertaining to the Social Security Administration’s (SSA’s) representative payee (rep payee) program. The report, Improving Social Security’s Representative Payee Program, outlines concrete steps to protect vulnerable beneficiaries and recipientsThe report includes recommendations for Congress, the Office of Management and Budget and SSA to strengthen the current administrative process, create better monitoring, and explore comprehensive, government-wide coordination and cross-agency reform of rep-payee processes. To accompany the report, an interactive chart collection has been published on the board’s website.  The chart collection highlights data related to the administration of the program and emphasizes the growing need for rep payees in the future.

Board releases summary of roundtable on SSA's research agenda

Today the Social Security Advisory Board announces the release of a new document: “Research Roundtable Summary: Participants’ views on a long-range research agenda for the Social Security Administration.” In August 2017, the board held a roundtable discussion in Washington, DC with scholars from around the country who were asked to suggest ideas for a long-range Social Security research agenda and to discuss the data needs they think are required to carry out that agenda. Additional scholars who did not attend the meeting submitted written suggestions. The document being released today summarizes thoughts and recommendations from over 30 individuals who participated in this process.

Social Security Advisory Board announces appointment of Kim Hildred as Chair

The President has designated Kim Hildred as Chair of the Social Security Advisory Board for a four-year term ending January 21, 2021. Ms. Hildred assumes the post from Henry Aaron, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution.
