Compliance

As part of its ongoing mission to improve health care quality, protect the public, and reduce health care fraud and abuse in the U.S., the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) reviews the completeness and accuracy of information submitted to the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB). Reviews include two compliance efforts: attestation and adverse action comparison.

Attestation

All State licensing and certification agencies (State licensing boards) in the U.S. and its territories renew their registration every two years and attest to their compliance with NPDB reporting requirements. Federal law requires State licensing boards report to the NPDB certain adverse actions. If your State licensing board has taken certain adverse actions that meet the NPDB reporting requirements, you must submit a report within 30 days of the date the action was taken.

Organizations that fail to submit their required NPDB reports may be subject to the sanctions outlined in 45 CFR 60.

Adverse Action Comparison

In addition to attestation, State licensing boards could be selected to participate in an adverse actions comparison review. HRSA conducts a review of State licensing board websites, comparing actions taken by the board with the reports they submitted to the NPDB.

Professions that hospitals and other health care organizations identify most often in their NPDB queries are included in the comparison review:

  • Physicians
  • Dentists
  • Nurses
  • Physician Assistants
  • Social Workers

Additional professions selected at random, are also included in the comparison review. All regulated health care professions are subject to review at the discretion of HRSA.

Compliance Results

The NPDB shares the results of compliance efforts with the public in two forms:

  • Results by State: This features an interactive U.S. map linking to the current compliance status for each state's licensing boards. The map shows the latest attestation and adverse action comparison review results for all reviewed boards in the state. Click on a state to view the results for each profession, then select a profession name to view detailed results for that profession.
  • Results by Profession: This lists all professions included in any review. Select a profession name to see the states that included the profession in their review and their compliance results.
