Department of Defense Policy

Department of Defense Directive 5124.02, “Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness (USD(P&R)),” June 23, 2008 – This directive updates the responsibilities, functions, relationships and authorities of the under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness.

U.S. Government Legislation

Public Law 113-291, “Carl Levin and Howard P. ‘Buck’ McKeon National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015,” Dec. 19, 2014 – This act addresses authorizations for the national defense for fiscal year 2015 and includes, under the reorganization of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the redesignation of the position of the assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs to the assistant secretary of defense for manpower and reserve affairs, addressed in Section 902.

Title 10, U.S. Code, Part 1, “Organization and General Military Powers” – This legislation includes Sections 111 to 498 of Title 10 and addresses organization and general military powers, including the assistant secretaries of defense within the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
