Women's History Month
VA proudly joins the Nation in celebrating Women's History Month in March. The theme
for 2011 is "Our History is Our Strength." For previous and future themes,
visit the National Women's History Project.
The month of March was designated as “Women’s History Month” in
remembrance of “International Women’s Day,” which has been celebrated
annually since March 8th, 1911. As the celebration progressed, it became a
week-long celebration, which became known as “Women’s History Week.”
In 1987, at the request of the National Women’s History Project,
the week-long observance was extended to a month-long observance encompassing the
entire month of March. Each year, the National Women’s History Project
determines an appropriate theme for each year’s celebrations and encourages
activities be planned around that theme.
Women’s History Month not only provides us with an opportunity to honor the
contributions of the trailblazers for gender equality throughout history, but it
also reminds us of the importance of empowering the many women today who are carrying
forth that legacy. Whether on a personal or organizational level, women continue
to have a positive impact on American society. That impact can only be felt
when we ensure they are afforded equal access and opportunities to fully participate
in the mission of VA. It is that inclusion that allows us to realize our full
potential, benefitting VA, our Veterans, and our Nation as a whole. VA continues
to monitor its efforts to ensure all employees, including women, are included in
all occupations, at all levels in the VA.
