The VA Advanced Fellowships Programs offer post-residency, post-doctoral, and post masters fellowships to physicians and dentists, and associated health professions - including but not limited to nurses, psychologists, social workers, and pharmacists. Although most Advanced Fellowship programs target clinical professions several programs offer training for non-clinical healthcare professions.
The Advanced Fellowships consists of approximately 20 distinct programs with each program having multiple training sites at VHA facilities across the country. Advanced Fellowships provide unique preparation for future leaders in healthcare by providing hands-on mentored educational experiences to develop skills in specific clinical areas and more broadly for healthcare system and healthcare education system transformation through policy, system redesign, and research. Through creative partnerships, use of new technology, and innovative educational modalities, the VA Advanced Fellowships Program promotes and fosters the highest standards of leadership, intellectual integrity, research, and patient care.
Curriculum for the Advanced Fellowship program is organized by local program directors in concert with OAA’s national training initiatives. For example, all Advanced Fellowships are organized under a broad collection of educational goals and emphasis areas as listed in the following table.
