VA Releases Opiod Rx Rate - In mid-January U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) Dr. David J. Shulkin announced that VA has begun publicly posting information on opioids dispensed from VA pharmacies, along with VA’s strategies to prescribe these pain medications more appropriately and safely. With this announcement, VA becomes the only health-care system in the country to post information on its opioid-prescribing rates. (01/26/2018)

VA Now Offering Direct Express® card to Veterans Receiving Medical Benefits - VA is now offering the Direct Express® card to Veterans receiving medical benefits. Just like electronic fund transfers (EFT) directly to bank accounts, deposits to the Direct Express card are safer and faster than paper checks. (10/20/2015)

Houston VA Stands Up for Homeless Veterans by Hosting the 15th Annual Stand Down - All U.S. Veterans being affected by homelessness or at risk of being affected, are invited to attend the 15th Annual Houston VA Stand Down. Here they will receive things like food, haircuts, clothing, medical screenings, as well as learn about employment and housing resources. Last year there were many Veterans who benefitted from the Stand Down. MEDIA ARE INVITED AND WELCOME TO ATTEND. (09/30/2015)

VA Doctor Receives Prestigious Award - An Interventional Pulmonologist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston has been named the winner of a prestigious American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology (AABIP) award. Dr. Roberto Casal, Director of the MEDVAMC’s Bronchoscopy Lab and Director of the Interventional Pulmonary Program at Baylor College of Medicine, will receive the 2015 George McLennan Memorial Award for Advances in Interventional Pulmonology at a conference next month. This prestigious award is presented to individuals for their contributions to the field of interventional pulmonology and who are judged by their peers to have a high likelihood of continued success. Women's Health Center Provides Top Quality Care - The saying “everything is bigger in Texas” is not unfamiliar to VA employees and Veterans in the Houston area. With more than 103,000 registered Veterans, MEDVAMC is one of the largest and most complex VA Medical Centers in the country. What you may not know is that the state of Texas is also home to the largest population of women Veterans in the country. More than 177,000 female Veterans reside in Texas and a growing number of them are seeking care at the MEDVAMC. (05/06/2015)

The Greatest Generation Wall - A new wall display at the MEDVAMC is getting quite a bit of attention. The Medical Center is highlighting World War II Veterans with a new “Greatest Generation” display on the first floor near the main lobby entrance. The hallway has become crowded with Veterans, visitors and employees stopping to look at pictures of approximately 70 Veterans who served in World War II. (04/02/2015)

A Volunteer Who Cares - The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) recently selected Houston resident Theodore “Ted” Pantallion as its Volunteer of the Year. Pantallion has given 2,170 volunteer hours assisting the Prime Care Outpatient Clinic as well as the Voluntary Service Office as a volunteer for the past two years. (04/25/2013)
