What countries are the largest sources of U.S. coal imports?

In 2017, the United States imported the most coal from Colombia—about 6.09 million short tons.1 This was about 78% of total U.S. coal imports of about 7.78 million short tons in 2017. Canada was the second-largest source of U.S. coal imports in 2017—about 0.89 million short tons (approximately 11% of total U.S. coal imports). The rest of U.S. coal imports in 2017 came from 13 other countries.
