Atlantic Salmon
The Atlantic salmon is a fish of many identities. Read More . . .
Atlantic salmon once returned by the hundreds of thousands to most major rivers along the northeastern United States, but now less than a thousand return to the rivers in Maine. Today, the most significant threats they face are dams and low marine survival. They are impacted by a number of other factors, such as pollution and overall ecosystem health.
The endangered wild Atlantic salmon in Maine are protected under the Endangered Species Act. NOAA FIsheries is working with partners to help restore wild Atlantic salmon and their habitat.
Our activities include:
- Improving fish passage by removing or modifying dams so salmon can reach freshwater spawning and rearing areas critical to their survival;
- Understanding and improving historically low salmon survival in the ocean; and
- Supplementing wild populations with hatchery-raised Atlantic salmon.
