    This year, the Inspector General community commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Inspector General Act. In October 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed the Act, establishing the first twelve presidentially appointed Inspectors General in federal departments and agencies.

    Rep. Lawrence H. Fountain (NC) was the original sponsor of H.R. 8588, which later became the IG Act of 1978. Mr. Fountain testified before the Senate on June 14, 1978, to further the legislation. Learn more at
