People who misuse alcohol or drugs may be at increased risk for getting or transmitting HIV. For example, when you're drunk or high, you're more likely to make decisions that put you at risk for HIV, such as having sex without using a condom. Also, people who inject drugs are at risk for getting or transmitting HIV if they share needles and other injection equipment.
