Eastern District of New York

Brooklyn Bridge

Welcome to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, one of the nation’s premier litigation offices representing the United States in three of the five boroughs of New York City – Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island – and both suburban counties on Long Island – Nassau and Suffolk. The district encompasses approximately eight million people, major international air and sea ports, extraordinary commercial and cultural activity, and a diversity and vitality that make it a unique and exciting place to live and work.

Our mission is to investigate, prosecute and deter violations of federal statutes, enforce and represent the interests of the United States in civil litigation, uphold civil, constitutional and victims’ rights, and foster partnerships with other federal, state and local government agencies and community groups.

The demographic composition of the district is diverse and comprises all economic strata. This socio-economic diversity poses unique challenges to law enforcement and also means the office prosecutes virtually every type of federal crime. The office has one of the Department’s most active and sophisticated national security programs (international and domestic terrorism, weapons proliferation, counterespionage and cyber security prosecutions), and also routinely prosecutes complex white collar crimes (market manipulation, corporate and securities fraud, health care fraud, mortgage fraud, money laundering and tax evasion schemes), public corruption, traditional organized crime (“La Cosa Nostra”) and emerging organized crime groups (including Russian and Asian organized criminal enterprises), international narcotics trafficking, violent domestic and international street gangs, civil rights violations, human and sex trafficking crimes, child pornography and exploitation offenses, environmental crimes and firearms trafficking.

Our civil docket is also vast and varied, including both affirmative and defensive litigation of virtually every variety – asset forfeiture, civil rights, environmental enforcement, defense contractor, health care, mortgage and government programs fraud, financial litigation and Civil RICO. Civil Division AUSAs also defend the federal government and its officials from constitutional and procedural challenges and from civil actions alleging claims in a broad spectrum of practice areas, including employment discrimination, torts, immigration, federal programs and federal benefits.

The Eastern District of New York was established on February 25, 1865, when President Abraham Lincoln approved an Act of Congress recommending its formation. On March 6, 1865, President Lincoln appointed Benjamin D. Silliman as the district’s first United States Attorney. The district and this office have a long and distinguished history. This is a tradition we proudly carry forward.
