Sen. Carper's Sussex County Schedule for Tuesday, August 5th

Visit Bethany Beach Police Department, Tour Bethany Beach Fire Company, Learn about UD Researchers' Latest Efforts to Save the Horseshoe Crab

Bethany Beach/Lewes, DE - Senator Tom Carper will spend Tuesday, August 5th in Sussex County. He will begin his day at the Bethany Beach Police Department to meet with Officer Joanna Reynolds. With assistance from Senator Carper's office, Ms. Reynolds was able to receive her citizenship and keep her job on the police force. Upon receiving a letter from the Bethany Beach Police Department in June asking for assistance, Senator Carper's office began immediately working on her case. A letter was sent to the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) along with a letter of recommendation from the Chief of the Bethany Beach Police Department. As a result, Ms. Reynolds was granted an interview with BCIS and subsequently obtained her naturalization Senator Carper will also visit the Bethany Beach Fire Company, which just received more than $30,000 in federal grant money. The Senator will meet with fire company officials to learn about their equipment as well as a get briefing on the new equipment they will purchase with the grant money. The grant was distributed through the Department of Homeland Security. Senator Carper will then visit with researchers at the University of Delaware's College of Marine Studies Lab in Lewes. Here, Senator Carper and DNREC Secretary John Hughes will learn about an artificial bait being developed to reduce fishing pressure on horseshoe crabs.
