How important is the census?  The census plays a vital role in distributing hundreds of billions of dollars in spending each year across more than 320 federal programs.  Around $34.3 billion was allocated to the state of Illinois in FY2016.  The largest of these programs, Medicaid, distributed $12 billion to the state.  Each Illinois resident not properly counted will cost the state approximately $18,000 in federal funds; or $1,800 every year for 10 years.  This affects funding for road construction projects, poverty reduction and crime-assistance programs in addition to school funding.
