Rep. Waters Message to CA-43 About Coronavirus

March 18, 2020
Press Release

Dear Neighbor,

I know there has been great concern recently about COVID-19, also known as the Coronavirus, and what we can do as a community to protect our families. It is imperative that you remain calm, informed, and follow the guidance of our Los Angeles County public health experts and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). My staff and I are closely monitoring the situation, and we have compiled this webpage to help better inform you and your families.

While there is currently no vaccine to prevent Coronavirus, you can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 through the following means:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or use the inside of your elbow. Throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces daily.
  • Avoid close contact (6 feet distance) with people who are sick.

Symptoms related to COVID-19 may appear 2 to 14 days after exposure and can include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Older adults and people who have serious chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, and lung disease, are at higher risk of getting seriously ill.  Call your doctor immediately if you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as a cough or difficulty breathing. If you do not have a doctor or a usual source of health care, you can call 2-1-1 in Los Angeles County.

My office is taking this seriously, and we’re ready to help you in any way we can. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions: 323-757-8900 (Los Angeles) or 202-225-2201 (Washington).

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Maxine Waters
