August 27, 2020
Press Release

MCALLEN, Texas – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced $54,545.72 in funding for firefighter safety and operations for the City of McAllen in the 15th District of Texas.

This grant was awarded as part of the Assistance for Firefighters Program (AFG) by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.

“Firefighters understand their duty is to protect and serve our community and that’s what makes them heroes,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “I’m proud to stand with the men and women who run toward the flames and danger in the 15th District of Texas. It’s imperative we keep them well-funded so they are able to respond to any situation.”

According to McAllen Mayor Jim Darling, the grant will help cover the costs of personal protective equipment purchased specifically related to the McAllen Fire Department’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This much needed equipment will not only help keep our firefighters safe, but also provide a safer working environment when our firefighters interact with the public, both in emergency and non-emergency settings,” Mayor Darling added.

“On behalf of the McAllen Fire Department, I would like to thank Congressman Vicente Gonzalez for announcing that our department would be awarded $54,545.72 through the Assistance to Firefighter Grant opportunity,” said James Schultz, Interim Fire Chief, McAllen Fire Department.  “Additionally, I would like to thank the McAllen Grants Department for their continued assistance in submitting successful grant applications!”
