As our population ages, we must ensure all seniors have access to the support and care they need to live independent, healthy lives. In order to keep the promises our country has made, we must keep Social Security and Medicare strong and stable for today’s seniors and future generations.
I will keep fighting to protect and strengthen Medicare and Social Security — and I will always oppose proposal to privatize or weaken these entitlements. I strongly support efforts to care for vulnerable seniors and to keep elderly Americans out of poverty, including through programs like Meals on Wheels.

Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) issued the following statement today after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 397, the Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act, also known as the Butch Lewis Act. H.R. 397 would stabilize multiemployer pension plans by establishing a government-backed loan program to avoid having to drastically cut pensioners’ benefits as well as reducing the unsustainable liabilities of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (“PBGC”).
Today Rep. Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) introduced the Keep Community Service Local Act, which would prevent the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) from closing state or territory offices without approval from Congress. CNCS is the federal agency responsible for overseeing AmeriCorps VISTA and many Senior Corps programs.
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) and 35 Congressional colleagues are calling on the CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), Barbara Stewart, to immediately suspend the closing of 46 state and territorial offices. Minnesota’s office is scheduled to close May 1, while some state offices have already closed. CNCS state and territorial offices administer AmeriCorps VISTA and National Senior Service Corps, including the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, the Foster Grandparent Program, and the Senior Companion Program.
