For the safety of staff and prospective interns, and at the advice of the House of Representatives, all internships have been suspended until further notice.

Washington, D.C.

In the Washington, D.C., office, internships run throughout the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters for college students or recent graduates. Although all internships in all offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives made some funds available to all Washington, D.C. offices to compensate interns. Due to the limited nature of these funds, the Washington, D.C. office awards them based on need to supplement housing costs in the area. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET when the House is in session and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET when the House is not in session.

In the Washington, D.C., office interns' responsibilities will vary. They may be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. Students specifically interested in press and political communications can gain experience in drafting press releases, social media posts, graphic design, and compiling daily media clips. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a Congressional Office.

District

In the District office, interns may be asked to do a variety of things, including day-to-day office work such as answering phones, writing letters, and attending district events. Internships run throughout the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters. Although all internships in all District offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. Interns serving in the District office may be assigned to assist with various constituent casework or work on District-based projects of importance.
