Davis Statement on Use of Force in Syria

I join in condemning the criminal use of chemical weapons in Syria.  I support a collective, international response to prosecute the use of such outlawed weapons as war crimes and I join those who have called for accountability for the use of the use these weapons.  However, we cannot stop the slaughter of Syrian civilians except by leading the effort to negotiate a political solution to the civil war in Syria.  Unilaterial U.S. military strikes will not stop the use of such terror weapons, nor will it advance the efforts to find a sustainable political solution to the horrific war in Syria.  Such military actions, conducted without authorization from the Congress, further undermine the fundamental Constitutional principles of our democracy and threaten to entangle us ever deeper an open-ended incendiary conflict with the potential to spin out of control into global conflict.
