Davis Statement Opposing Trump Administration Plans for Arming Educators

According to a report in the New York Times “The Education Department is considering whether to allow states to use federal funding to purchase guns for educators, according to multiple people with knowledge of the plan.”

When the Congress appropriated funds for school safety after the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida we specifically prohibited school safety funds from being used to arm teachers.  Now the Trump Administration is planning to use dollars from Title IV funds which are intended for Student Support and Academic Enrichment grants designed to fund mental health treatment for students, anti-bullying programming, drug prevention in schools, and other important services.

The misuse of these funds will deny these much needed services to students in underserved schools and will endanger the lives and safety of students and educators. The Trump administration is violating the spirit of the law as well as common sense about gun safety. Should the administration continue down this path I will support legislation to protect students and educators from their ill considered actions.
