LOUISVILLE– Today, Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-3) was tested for COVID-19 at the drive-thru Norton Healthcare’s Respiratory Illness Testing Center in Louisville. Yarmuth—who has no symptoms and is in good health—was tested out of an abundance of caution after participating in mass gatherings over the weekend, including the vigil for Breonna Taylor and a visit to Jefferson Square Park.

The Congressman is using the opportunity to urge all Louisvillians who participated in recent protests to join him in also seeking testing—in addition to continuing to wear a mask, practice proper hygiene, and employ safe social distancing measures.

“While so many of us have been compelled to take to the streets and raise our voices—in protest, in solidarity, and in grief—it’s important that we also remember that we still face a global pandemic that threatens us all,” said Yarmuth. “We can assemble and also stay safe. We can call out the injustices we see happening in our community without endangering those we stand with in this fight. I’m glad to be tested and to make sure that I’m not putting my loved ones, my constituents, and the most vulnerable in our community at risk by possibly transmitting this virus. I urge everyone on the front lines of our protests to join me in doing the same.”

More than 300,000 Kentuckians have been tested for the virus statewide as of June 10, according to data compiled by the Kentucky Department for Public Health. This weekend alone, the Norton Testing Center and a separate testing location set up near the center of protests welcomed nearly 900 Louisvillians seeking tests after participating in mass gatherings over the past two weeks.

Norton Healthcare is offering testing, which is available at no cost, to anyone in the community, but you must schedule an appointment.  Appointments can be made by visiting their website or calling (502) 861-4611, option 1.

COVID-19 testing is also available through most area hospitals and health care providers in Louisville, as well at sites throughout the city and state. Those with additional questions about testing are urged to contact their health care provider for more information.
