Gun Violence Prevention

ABOVE: Watch John's statement on gun violence prevention in the wake of the tragic massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The incomprehensible gun violence we have experienced across our nation over the past several years requires every citizen, and certainly every public official, to reflect on our responsibilities to our fellow citizens. I agree that Americans have the right to defend themselves and their property. I believe even more fiercely that I have the right, and every man, woman and child has the right, to be safe from guns without carrying a gun. That is the challenge we face today, and it is a challenge we must not put off another day.

Legislation

Rep. Yarmuth supports – and has always supported – the proposed ban on assault weapons. In addition, he is an original cosponsor of H.R. 4052, the Keep Americans Safe Act, which restores the prohibition of the transfer, importation, and possession of Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Devices (LCADs); H.R. 4240, the Public Safety and Second Amendment Rights Protection Act, which requires a background check for every firearm sale; and H.R. 3464, the Background Check Completion Act, which closes a loophole and only allow firearm sales with an approved National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) background check, commonly referred to as the “Charleston Loophole.”
