Webster Applauds House Passage of Bipartisan Water Resources Development Act of 2020

Washington, DC - Florida Congressman Daniel Webster (R-Clermont) today released the following statement on House passage of bipartisan Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2020.

“Water is critical for life and solid infrastructure is critical to Florida’s economy which is dependent on moving goods and people efficiently and effectively.  Throughout my public service, I have advocated for policies that support local projects and worked to find solutions that preserve and protect Florida’s precious natural resources, while balancing the needs of our growing economy. WRDA2020 authorizes funding for critical ports, inland waterways, locks, dams, flood protection, ecosystem restoration, and other water resources infrastructure important to Florida and our nation.

“I am pleased to have worked with my colleagues on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to draft this bipartisan bill that delivers for Floridians. I thank Ranking Member Sam Graves and Subcommittee Ranking Member Bruce Westerman for incorporating my input in drafting this critical legislation. The bill gives the Army Corps the flexibility to maintain our ports, on a consistent basis, to their statutorily authorized depth. This has been an ongoing hinderance for more than one port and directing to Corps will reduce the risk of shoaling and economically disastrous consequences.

“Importantly, WRDA2020 passed without language that would have harmed those who depend on the proper management of water that flows out of Lake Okeechobee. Thanks to hard work with committee leadership and stakeholders across Florida, included in the bill is an agreement that helps tackle algae blooms, while also ensuring water access for everyone and the Everglades are protected.

“From famers, to fishermen, to boaters, to the Everglades this bill is a huge win for Florida. I encourage the U.S. Senate to swiftly pass and send this legislation to President Trump’s desk.”

Important Elements of WRDA2020:

• Unlocks the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund (HMTF) by providing the authority to make available $2 billion in additional funds annually for harbor maintenance needs from the existing balance in the Trust Fund.
• Authorizes the Corps to study, design and construct water resources projects for communities that have been subjected to repetitive flooding events and have received emergency flood assistance obtain critical flood protection.
• Supported by over 100 outside groups including: Ducks Unlimited, the Everglades Foundation, the American Sportfishing Association, the American Petroleum Institute, Associated General Contractors of America, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Farm Bureau, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the Waterways Council, the National Stone, Sand, and Gravel Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
