Member Open Choice Period Frequently Asked Questions

What is happening?

Iowa Total Care is joining the IA Health Link program on July 1, 2019, and UnitedHealthcare is leaving the IA Health Link program no sooner than June 30, 2019. Amerigroup Iowa will continue to provide IA Health Link coverage. Because of this transition, members will be assigned to either Amerigroup Iowa or Iowa Total Care, but they can switch MCOs at anytime by contacting IME Member Services.

Do members have to accept their initial assignment?

No. During the Open Choice Period members can change their initial assignment to either Amerigroup Iowa or Iowa Total Care. Members have this choice until June 18, 2019, for coverage effective July 1, 2019. However, members can still opt to change their MCO for any reason until September 30, 2019.

When can I make my MCO choice?

The Iowa Medicaid Enterprise (IME) is processing MCO choice requests now, but choices made through June 18, 2019 will not take effect until July 1, 2019. Until then, members will remain with their current MCO.

Will families stay together?

Yes. Families will remain grouped together with the same MCO.

What if I change MCOs and I don’t like it?

All members will have until September 30, 2019 to change their MCO for any reason. After this date, members may only change MCOs for reasons of good cause or during their annual choice period.

If I change MCOs, will my services stay the same?

Services will not change as long as eligibility remains the same. However, each MCO has additional value-added services that may be unique to their individual health plan.
