Transatlantic Taskforce on Antimicrobial Resistance (TATFAR)
TATFAR is a multilateral group made up of antimicrobial resistance experts from government agencies within Canada, the European Union, Norway, and the U.S.
The Taskforce’s work is guided by three key areas:
- Improving antibiotic use in humans and animals
- Preventing infections and their spread
- Strengthening the drug pipeline
TATFAR Purpose
TATFAR was created in 2009 to address the urgent threat of antimicrobial resistance and improve cooperation between the U.S. and the European Union.

CDC currently serves as the secretariat for TATFAR, providing administrative support and maintaining the website for the Taskforce.
TATFAR is a Unique Collaboration
Collaboration across government agencies enhances synergy and communication, leading to strengthened domestic and global efforts. For example, collaboration leads to:
- Increased information exchange to improve understanding of AMR internationally
- Understanding best practices and putting international discovery into practice
- Development of peer relationships
The synergy shared between members is invaluable and has resulted in practical applications for laboratories, healthcare settings, and communities worldwide.
