CDC supports activities carried out by state and local health departments, partners, and investigators to combat antibiotic resistance. CDC supports most of these activities through the Antibiotic Resistance (AR) Solutions Initiative, and leverages investments from successful programs across the agency for maximum efficiency. These activities are funded through different mechanisms, some of which are listed below.

Funding for State and Local Health Departments

• Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) for Infectious Diseases Cooperative Agreement: Supports antibiotic resistance activities in every state, including state and local laboratory and epidemiological expertise. Learn more on CDC’s ELC website.

Funding for Businesses, Universities, and Healthcare Partners

• Broad Agency Announcement (BAA): Contracts with educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, state and local government, and private industry for research and development to identify and evaluate strategies to combat antibiotic resistance. Learn more on CDC’s BAA website.
• Modeling Infectious Diseases in Healthcare Network (MInD – Healthcare): Established a virtual laboratory where researchers can investigate factors that drive spread of healthcare-associated infections and simulate multiple prevention strategies to estimate their benefits in a timely and cost-effective manner.
