As people get older, their bodies are less able to compensate for the effects of environmental hazards. Air pollution, like ozone, particle pollution (PM), and especially fine particle pollution (PM2.5), is most likely to affect the health of older adults.

Ozone, the main ingredient of smog, presents a serious air quality problem in many parts of the United States. Even at low levels, ozone can cause health effects. You can take simple steps, described in this pamphlet, to protect your health from ozone.

Children are one of the sensitive groups at risk for health effects from air pollution, in part because their lungs are still developing. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is an important tool for letting children know when air quality in their area is unhealthy and how they, their families, and communities can protect their health. The AQI uses a color-coded scale and maps to provide daily air quality information. The AQI is available on the Internet at: www.airnow.gov, and many local newspapers and television and radio stations also present the AQI.

This toolkit was designed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for weathercasters who make educational presentations to schools and civic groups. The toolkit contains key materials to help audiences understand how they can use the AQI to find out about local air quality and how they can protect their health when the air is polluted.

Coco has a problem. He’s a chameleon, but he can’t change colors, and his asthma is acting up. Read how Coco and his friends at Lizard Lick Elementary solve this mystery as they learn about air quality and how to stay healthy when the air quality is bad. This book is for all children, especially those with asthma, and their caretakers. Ages 4-8.

Wildfire concerns include the fire itself, the smoke and ash, and the chemicals from materials that have burned, such as furniture. Smoke can travel hundreds of miles from the source of a fire. Pay attention to local air quality reports during fire season, even if no fire is nearby.
