VA's Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry allows eligible Veterans and service members to document their exposures and report health concerns through an online questionnaire.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) and your risk

Veterans have the same risk for Coronavirus infection and COVID-19 illness severity as the general population, based on the current understanding of this virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), those who are at higher risk for more severe complications from COVID-19 include older adults, smokers, and those with certain health conditions.  Find the CDC’s full list of health conditions that increase the risk for more severe complications from COVID-19.  Based on the best available science, Veterans without underlying health conditions listed by the CDC are not at an increased risk for illness severity. Learn about prevention, including wearing a mask, hand-washing and social distancing. Find the latest information about COVID-19 from VA. If you have specific health concerns, please contact your primary health care team.

Eligible Veterans and service members include those who served in:

  • Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn
  • Djibouti, Africa on or after September 11, 2001
  • Operations Desert Shield or Desert Storm
  • Southwest Asia theater of operations on or after August 2, 1990

What you Need to Know

  • There's no cost to participate
  • You should schedule a free health exam with a VA provider after completing the questionnaire
  • Participation is not required for other VA benefits such as disability compensation
  • Enrollment in VA health care is not required
  • Answers should be based on your recollection of service, not on your military records
  • Family members are not eligible to participate
  • Your participation contributes to research on airborne hazards and health, which helps improve the quality of care for Veterans


Burn Pit Registry Passes 200,000 Participant Milestone

VA’s Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry passed a milestone of greater than 200,000 participants. In total, 212,829 Veterans and service members completed and submitted the registry questionnaire between April 25, 2014 and August 20, 2020.
