Waste rock from long-closed mines in the eastern Adirondack Mountains, New York, may prove valuable due to its rare earth element content, according to newly published research. The results are from airborne and ground surveys conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey and collaborators.

In support of the President’s policy, USGS and NASA will leverage their full technological abilities to meet the nation’s growing environmental information needs.

LARAMIE, Wyo. – For the first time, state and federal wildlife biologists have come together to map the migrations of ungulates – hooved mammals such as mule deer, elk, pronghorn, moose and bison – across America’s West. The maps will help land managers and conservationists pinpoint actions necessary to keep migration routes open and functional to sustain healthy big-game populations.

The U.S. Geological Survey announced Friday the completion of a new mobile tool that provides real-time information on water levels, weather and flood forecasts all in one place on a computer, smartphone or other mobile device. 

The Austin Chalk and Tokio and Eutaw Formations of the Gulf Coast Basin contain a mean of 6.9 billion barrels of oil and 41.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas according to a new assessment by the U.S. Geological Survey. In comparison, the U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates that the United States used 7.5 billion barrels of petroleum products in 2019.

Jim Reilly: Trump administration uses “eDNA” to combat invasive species

A new digital geologic map of the greater Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metropolitan area of Oregon and Washington being released today will support emergency response, conservation, agriculture and recreation.

The U.S. Geological Survey and the Association of American State Geologists are pleased to announce the projects that have received funding for FY2020 under the USGS Mineral Resources Program’s Earth Mapping Resources Initiative, or Earth MRI. New projects in 21 states will receive $7.97 million in funding in fiscal year 2020 to improve the Nation’s mapping of shallow and deep geology.
