Data, publications and library

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) collects data from a variety of sources to provide information and analyses on the status and scope of the fire problem in the United States. Our studies, reports and public education materials may be ordered or downloaded free of charge from our Publications Center. In addition, the USFA operates the National Emergency Training Center’s library. The library provides information and resources on fire, emergency management and other all-hazards subjects.

Statistics

USFA collects data from a variety of sources to provide information and analyses on the status and scope of the fire problem in the United States. We use these data to highlight current and emerging trends in fires, including what causes fires, where they occur, and who is impacted the most by fire. We also analyze the circumstances surrounding on-duty firefighter fatalities to help identify approaches that can reduce the number of deaths and injuries in future years.

Causes of fatal residential building fires in 2018
2,000 fatal fires (estimated)
Causes of residential building fires resulting in injuries in 2018
7,500 fires resulting in injuries (estimated)

NFIRS

The National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) is a reporting standard that fire departments use to uniformly report on the full range of their activities, from fire to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to equipment involved in the response. NFIRS is the world's largest, national, annual database of fire incident information. The database comprises about 75 percent of all reported fires that occur annually.
