Update for IA Veterans

Recently, Ranking Member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Congressman Mike Bost, joined me in Iowa to hear directly from veterans in our community and see our VA system. Despite the chaos and dysfunction in DC, we’ve had success working across the aisle to ensure our veterans are receiving the care they deserve, but there is much more to be done. That’s why I brought Ranking Member Bost to the district – I want to make sure the perspective of Iowa veterans is strongly represented as veterans-related legislation is considered.

We toured the Iowa City VA Medical Center and discussed staff shortages, their work to improve the culture at the VA, their innovative transplant programs, and the importance of providing the best possible care to our veterans.

We then visited the Freedom Foundation in Cedar Rapids and saw their “veterans helping veterans” approach firsthand. I’m grateful for all they do to serve veterans in our community.

We ended the day with a roundtable with veteran service officers (VSOs) and local nonprofit leaders. VSOs are on the front lines of serving our veterans, and I am thankful for the work they do day in and day out to advocate for Iowa veterans to receive the care and benefits they have earned.

We promise our veterans that we will take care of them when they return home, and there is still a lot of work to do to live up to that promise. I will work with anyone who will work with me on behalf of Iowa's veterans.
