Manning Joins First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, U.S. Secretary of Education Cardona at North Carolina A&T State University to Highlight Successes

Manning shares North Carolina’s Sixth District’s higher education successes and highlights the utilization of American Rescue Plan funding to help students excel academically and implement job training programs

Greensboro, N.C. – Today, Congresswoman Kathy Manning (NC-06) welcomed First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to North Carolina A&T State University to discuss workforce development and highlight the University’s success. Today’s event, which took place at A&T’s Harold L. Martin, Sr. Engineering Research & Innovation Complex, is part of the Department of Education’s ‘Road to Success Back to School Bus Tour’ to showcase the ways that communities across the country are helping students recover from the impacts of the pandemic and thrive academically through use of American Rescue Plan Funding.

“It was my pleasure to welcome Dr. Jill Biden and Secretary Cardona to Greensboro today and share the successes of the Sixth District’s colleges and universities,” said Congresswoman Kathy Manning. “North Carolina A&T State University is a perfect example of how institutions of higher education can leverage American Rescue Plan funding to advance equitable education and workforce development, providing diverse students with the advanced skills they need to build good careers. I’m looking forward to watching North Carolina’s educational institutions flourish and our economy grow with the help from federal funding.”

Following Rep. Manning’s advocacy, North Carolina A&T State University received $23.7 million in federal funding through the American Rescue Plan to implement a clean-energy workforce development program across North Carolina that will help students gain the skills they need and address issues of equity in education. Martin Sr. “We hope their presence invites more students, schools and school districts to learn about A&T and the special role we play in educating future teachers, school administrators and counselors who are passionate and committed to ensuring the success of students from all backgrounds toward a vibrant future.”

North Carolina A&T State University also received an initial $93 million through the American Rescue Plan to provide financial relief to students during the pandemic and ensure that students were able to continue learning through the pandemic. Guilford Technical Community College also received $28 million in American Rescue Plan funding. On September 12, 2022, Secretary of Education Cardona launched the Road to Success Back to School Bus Tour in North Carolina, to highlight the many ways that federal funding is supporting college and university students as they recover from the impacts of the pandemic on learning. Secretary Cardona was joined by Dr. Jill Biden and Rep. Manning (NC-06) at North Carolina A&T State University. Following this visit, Secretary Cardona visited Guilford Technical Community College to speak with professors and students about the community college's high school to career pathways program.
