Committee Assignments
In the 117th Congress (2021-2022), her third term in office, U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. In the 115th Congress (2017-2018), her first term in office, she served on the House Small Business Committee and the House Armed Services Committee. In the 116th Congress (2019-2020), her second term in office, she served exclusively on the House Ways and Means Committee.
Congresswoman Murphy is the only Florida Democrat—and one of only about 25 women in history to have served—on the Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over revenues, Medicare and other federal health programs, Social Security, and trade. Congresswoman Murphy serves on the Subcommittee on Trade. In her two terms on this subcommittee, Congresswoman Murphy has carved out a reputation as one of the leading voices on trade on Capitol Hill. Florida’s economy is highly dependent on trade in goods and services, with trade supporting nearly one in five jobs in the state.
Congresswoman Murphy also serves on the Subcommittee on Worker and Family Support, which has jurisdiction over numerous federal programs and initiatives to help working families, including the Unemployment Insurance program. Congresswoman Murphy helped increase the weekly benefit available to unemployed workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, led congressional oversight of the Florida government’s flawed administration of the UI program, and enacted a bipartisan bill to help Florida workers who were mistakenly paid federal unemployment benefits through no fault of their own.
Congresswoman Murphy, a former national security specialist at the Department of Defense, is the only Florida Democrat on the Armed Services Committee. She serves as vice-chair of the Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations, which has jurisdiction over military intelligence, special operations forces, counter-terrorism, efforts to stop the production and spread of weapons of mass destruction, and other sensitive military operations.
Murphy also serves on the Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces, which has jurisdiction over ground and aviation programs for the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy, as well as various National Guard and Reserve accounts. There are over 100,000 service members stationed in Florida, serving on active duty, in the reserves, or in the Florida National Guard, along with over 1.4 million military veterans.
Leadership Positions
Congresswoman Murphy serves in two leadership positions in the House. She is co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of Democrats focused on fiscal responsibility, a strong national defense, and a pragmatic approach to legislating. Congresswoman Murphy is the first woman of color to lead the Blue Dog Coalition, and is only the second leader in the Coalition’s history to serve consecutive terms.
Congresswoman Murphy also serves as a Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Majority. In this role, she helps Democrats better communicate with House leadership so that legislation that comes to the House floor reflects the views of the entire Democratic caucus. Congresswoman Murphy also has a seat on the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, which recommends committee assignments to the Democratic Caucus and helps shape the House policy agenda.
