MINNEAPOLIS—Rep. Ilhan Omar issued the following statement after the Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act.

“The Inflation Reduction Act is a historic bill. With the Senate’s passage, we are one step closer to passing the biggest climate bill ever, lowering drug prices, taxing wealthy corporations, and more. The bill includes a much needed tax on corporate buybacks of their own stocks, averts a benefits cliff by extending health care subsidies for 3 years, allows Medicare to negotiate drug prices, and would reduce carbon emissions by roughly 40 percent by 2030.

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Ilhan Omar voted to protect Minnesota communities and save lives by voting to ban assault weapons. The Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 would prohibit the sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession of semiautomatic assault weapons and high capacity magazines. These weapons are designed to inflict wounds that are more lethal and injurious than the wounds inflicted by non-assault weapons.

WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) and U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) reintroduced the No Shame at School Act, to prohibit school districts from publicly identifying and shaming students who are unable to pay for school meals or hiring debt collectors to recover unpaid school meal debt. Additionally, this bill requires schools to attempt to directly certify a child with unpaid meal debt and allows schools to be retroactively reimbursed for meals served to a child.
