Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Congratulates the Recipients of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for their work addressing Sexual Violence as a Weapon of war

Jackson Lee: “The decision to recognize these two individuals for this august honor is a recognition that war brings with it carnage and horror, beyond tanks, guns and other weapons.  It corrodes society and visits on the most vulnerable the most unspeakable types of crimes.”

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, and senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget, released this statement on the announcement of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize:

“I congratulate Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad on their selection as recipients of the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.  The decision to recognize these two individuals for this august honor is a recognition that war brings with it carnage and horror, beyond tanks, guns and other weapons.  Using rape as a weapon of war exacerbates the corrosion of society and visits the most unspeakable types of crimes on the most vulnerable citizens among us.  Let us take a moment to congratulate these laureates, work towards ameliorating these crimes—in and out of a theater of war—and march, unfailing, towards peace on earth, and goodwill towards all men.”
