Historical Artifacts: Passes

Passes for admission to events at the Capitol—Congressional sessions, State of the Union addresses, inaugurations, and more—began to appear in the 1870s. Beginning as handwritten notes, passes evolved into strikingly engraved, colorful cards. Retained as mementos of a visit, many have become part of the House Collection.
