Food Insecurity

During my time in the Pennsylvania State Legislature, I championed Pennsylvania’s Fresh Food Financing Initiative which links public and private funds to expand and build grocery stores in food deserts across our state. Through the initiative we brought nearly 100 grocery stores to areas in Philadelphia and underserved areas across the commonwealth that previously had very limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

In the House of Representatives I am a member of the House Agriculture Committee, where I serve on the Subcommittee on Nutrition and the Subcommittee on Livestock and Foreign Agriculture. To learn more about my work on the House Agriculture Committee please visit this link

This week, Congressman Dwight Evans (PA-02) joined with Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH), Congressman Ryan Costello (R-PA), and Congressman Donald McEachin (D-VA) to introduce comprehensive legislation to incentivize food service providers such as grocers, retailers, and nonprofits to help eradicate food deserts.

Last week, Congressman Dwight Evans (PA-02) meet with United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue. A few days after their meeting, Secretary Perdue spoke at the 90th National Future Farmers of America (FFA) Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, IN and highlighted Walter Biddle Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences in Roxborough, PA in his remarks.

North Light Food Pantry serves over 1,000 Philadelphians annually, as they provide food to our working families in Pennsylvania's Second Congressional District. As you know, President Trump’s appalling budget hurts Philadelphians trying to get ahead. Our veterans, senior citizens, children and families depend on SNAP to put food on the table week after week.

Today, Congressman Dwight Evans (PA-02) and Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (OH-11) introduced legislation to reauthorize the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI).  The Healthy Food Financing Initiative Reauthorization Act of 2018 authorizes $125 million to provide loans, grants and financing opportunities for food retailers, farmers markets, cooperatives and others who face barriers to carrying and selling fresh fruits and vegetables.

Last month, I traveled to Jordan with humanitarian organization CARE to see firsthand how U.S. foreign assistance programs are saving lives and building the resilience of displaced individuals and families during one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. Currently, Jordan is home to more than 660,000 Syrian refugees, the majority of whom are women and girls and half of whom are under the age of 18.
